For the next few weeks, we are going to take you through our home, our Newlywed Paradise, to rooms and spaces that have not been seen on this blog.
Our Bathroom.
It is the only bathroom in our home.
It is the only bathroom in our home.
Even though it is small, it has a great vintage vibe! When I began house hunting in October of 2006, I came across some mega crazy color combinations in bathrooms! Gray and pink, blue and pink, even maroon and pink! When I stepped into this bathroom, I felt lucky.
Now, the bathroom did not look like the above picture when I moved in. It needed work. Unfortunately, I never took a before picture. Envision, flower wallpaper on the walls and yellow/brown marks covering the ceiling from years of someone smoking. Even the caulk was yellowed! Also, the mirror above the sink had a matching light fixture in olive green!
After much scraping, priming, and painting, the bathroom finally felt the way it should! Instead of replacing the mirror above the sink, I painted the edge white. We bought a new light fixture and accessories.
Features we love:
The sink. Sure there isn't a lot of counter space, but that is what that cabinet above the sink and toilet are for! This sink forces us to keep our clutter hidden and put away. I do hate that faucet, though. We plan to replace that.
The Tub Fixtures. I wouldn't change these out for the world! I know some of you may think I am crazy, but they just make the tub!
The Tile details. Who could resist the tooth brush and soap holders! Even the towl bar!
Things We Aren't so Crazy About:
The Shower Doors. We thought about getting new doors. The dark, tinted glass makes the space feel smaller. So, we discussed clear glass. Then my mom suggested we take the doors off completely and have a shower curtain.
The Bar Near the Toilet. An older woman lived in my home before I purchased it. That explains the bar. We plan to take the bar off and fill in the holes, but aren't sure how it would look.

This is where I need your help. What do you think? Shower curtains or new doors? What to do with the holes left over from the bar?

Shower curtain. A nice white shower curtain, either very tailored or with a few, very small ruffles (the modern way --like pillows are done). May be you could cut out the tiles with the holes and replace with white tiles? May be you could randomly cut out some tiles around the bathroom and replace it with white tiles, so it would seem like it was a planned thing?
I second shower curtain! Easy to clean, cheap, and endless options...what's not to love? I also love your shower fixtures (very similar to our old ones), oh how I wish ours were in that good of shape! And I have no idea what one would do for the holes in the tile...good luck and make sure to let us know!
Definitely get a shower curtain! It will really open up the space. I'm not sure what to do with the bar though. I would think you'd need to put new tiles in. When we bought our house, we found some extra bathroom tiles in the basement. Maybe you were as lucky?
I would agree with everyone else - shower curtains!!! they have some many cool ones out there now -
I don't know how to hide the holes from the towel bar - originally I was gonna say put a shelf up to hide the holes but they are at a wierd angle -
will have to ask my handyman!!!
There is no doubt in my mind you should get a shower curtian. How about a beautiful monogramed curtian??
PS.. who smokes in the bathroom?? That's a odd place, don't you think?

Shower curtain! New doors will cost 20x as much and won't go with your tile as well.
For the holes, I have no clue. Maybe try to find a match by searching vintage tile?
Curtain!
I'm actually planning on hanging a curtain over the glass doors in my master bath - just for looks, and then if I decide to rip out the doors I can do that later.
The holes are tricky...it would be extremely difficult to match the tiles. I recently saw decals for tiles that are permanent, maybe you could add those, just on the window wall, and camouflage the two imperfect tiles? I'll try to find you a link :)
Shower curtain would be great but I'm not sure about the holes. It's a nice bathroom!
I agree with everyone else - a shower curtain would make the space feel a lot bigger. I like your tub fixtures - very cool!
Ok, this might be a bit too much info, or even a little gross to some, but...
I love having a bar next to the toilet, and I'm only in my 30's.
HAHAHA! Eric, you made my day! I should keep the bar just for that reason!
I love your bathroom! It has character and it's in great condition. I would definitely go for the shower curtain. You can pull it back when not in use and have the illusion of a more open space.

The green tiles & vintage tub handles are great! I feel your pain on the smoking bit - the previous owner of our house smoked, too. Eww.
I think you should definitely go for a curtain - or at least try the curtain first since it's a cheaper solution. We removed opaque doors from our bath & it seems so so so much bigger now. The only thing is that some of the screws holding the door up might be in your tile, which would mean you've got more tile to figure out how to fill in...
On that note, would it be too ridiculous to fill them in and then paint the hole filler a color that matches the tile? Do they make tint-able tile paint? I know I've seen tile painted before, so there must be something that could work...
What did u decide on?
Shower curtain! You can go simple and classic or bold and fun, either of which will bring a whole new life to your space. Plus, if you ever get sick of it, you only have to shell out $15 or $20 for a new one. Can't wait to see what you decide!
And yes, I think you totally lucked out with your bathroom. I'm very impressed by your ability to make the small counter space function. You're pretty awesome!
I vote shower curtain! I love that you appreciate the vintage quality of your bathroom. So few people do. We have no plans to remodel ours either.
Definitely go with a shower curtain. Glass shower doors age a space significantly.. and not in a good way! I love the vintage feel of the rest of the bathroom, though. Quite charming!
