Sneak Peak...Basement

As some of you know, in our basement, we have been organizing and redecorating.  First was the laundry area, now it is the "tool room".  We call it the tool room because that is where all the tools are stored...duh.  Our goal is to make the basement a some what useable and organized space.

You have to excuse my picture taking.  The room looks like this at the moment.  Might explain why I have been a little absent from posting lately.  It is a maze of crap!

Without further a-do, here are the before and afters, so far:

Scary Shelves...

Not so scary anymore!

Multicolor work bench...

Now, all one color!

Random cabinet...

Now, matches the rest!

We still have some work to do.  The cinder block walls were painted with a fresh coat of white paint and shelving above the work bench is being painted also.

Next for the surface of the work bench and the cement flooring.  Here are the colors we have choosen!

Rich Navy for the work bench surface and Rich Brown for the floor.

You may ask yourself (or not) why did we paint everything white or cream so far?  Well, there is not very much light in the space.  It needed some white to brighten it up.  Instead of making everything white, cream, or neutral, I wanted to add a pop of color.  Clint and I grabbed about 5 bold colors and a sample book for floor paint and got to work.  This combo kept standing out to us.

There is still a lot to be done, other than painting.  Our goal was to finish this by Spring and I think that is out the window!  Who knew a tiny room could be this much work!

So what do you think so far?  Are we doing a job good?

Great job! Our basement looks horrid compared to your basement. My husband's tools are still a mess...we've been here since 1999. Just never had the extra money needed to build or obtain shelving. It's a pain when he has to find something to do a bit of work. A lot of swearing (just like on A Christmas Story) comes up from the basement.

Wow. A nice new coat of paint makes such a big difference, doesn't it!? Your basement looks prettier and more organized already, and it sounds like you've got more work to do!

The white was a great choice for a basement, and I think the Navy and Brown will look great, too. Are you using the special just-for-basement-floors paint? We painted ours with that a few months ago and it looks great, but it gets kind of flaky when the water softener overflows and water spills everywhere. :( So be careful not to get it wet and it will look lovely! :)

love how it's coming along - I love everything white - especially since it's a basement and needs light.
You are going to love having a place for all the tools and stuff that's organized and will be so much easier to keep clean.

great job -can't wait to see how it looks when it's painted

@ Jen - We are using the paint that is suppose to be for basement floors. There is paint on it already and when we had a back up a couple years ago, it did take some of that paint off. So it does need a fresh coat. Thanks for the tip though!! We can always use them!

Love the color combination you've chosen! Great work so far. Our projects always seem to take about twice the time we've budgeted for them--such is the nature of home improvement, I guess!

It looks SO GREAT so far!!! You've seriously done a fabulous job! All of that white makes everything look so bright and clean! And with the navy and brown, that room is going to be killer!!

It looks amazing so far. The white really does open things up and add an element of organization. Sometimes the smallest rooms take the longest. I think its because we tend to shove so much into them--or maybe that's just me.

You're doing a great job! That's a lot of work. We also have an unfinished basement that we need to freshen up but I'm so not looking forward to it.

I think white was a good choice. Our basement also needs freshening up. Thanks for the motivation!

GREAT JOB!!!
I love it when people take a bit of extra time to make the basements (and garages) neat, organized, and even decorated. They needn't be neglected, as they are just other rooms of the same house.
You are doing a FANTASTIC job - next step - Lighting!

Your basement reminds me of my 2nd bedroom. No matter how many times I clear it out, it always fills up with junk. Your basement is looking good! PS - Thanks for the comment today!

Lookin nice, our basement is a disaster because the floor had tons of layers of paint that never properly dried. No matter what we do, the old red color comes back through our (properly applied) tan concrete paint. Ugh.

Great work so far! The Coors mat kills me... :)

@ Kim - hahaha! Clint found that mat at Target for $1.00 and had to have it. I refused to put it upstairs. lol.

Love the walls white. I think that I may need to do ours white, too. Good call.
